“Unbreakable” News Report and Theme Song

“Unbreakable” News Report and Theme Song

April 19, 2015 By Greg Falken Leave a Comment

If you’ve watched Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt on Netflix, you’ve probably had a hard time getting the theme song out of your head. If you haven’t watched, the show is kind of Mary Tyler Moore meets the Simpsons, with more gags per frame than anything in recent memory.

The song comes from a news report in the opening episode that sets up the entire series. Watch the interview with Walter Bankston (played by Mike Britt) and then watch the extended version of the theme. There’s a lot going on in there.

50th Anniversary of the Moog Modular Synthesizer

October 13, 2014 By Greg Falken Leave a Comment

Moog Modular SynthesizerOctober 12, 2014 marks the 50 Year anniversary of the unveiling of the Moog modular synthesizer at the Audio Engineering Society’s New York convention. Unlike today, there were no robotic assembly lines. These were completely analog instruments. Each one was hand crafted, with every electrical component soldered to a circuit board. Modules were fitted into wooden cabinets with screws. But more important were the new sounds, which could be combined in infinite variations. In many ways, Moog defined the sound of late 60s and early 70s rock.

This mini documentary follows the company’s reproduction of the modular system built for Keith Emerson, of Emerson, Lake and Palmer and delivered in 1969. It includes interviews with a Moog engineer, Moog historian and Bob Moog himself.

Below that, take a listen to Emerson, Lake and Palmer’s Welcome Back My Friends, which holds up surprisingly well over time.

Wild Ride

I keep coming back to this song, which I saw performed live twice this summer by Chris Webster and Nina Gerber. The volume is a little low on this video. Turn it up!

Everything you need to know about Net Neutrality

As is so often the case, the comedy shows tell the story clearly, with great examples and a clear call to action. Watch this clip from Last Week Tonight With John Oliver and you’ll laugh while wanting to cry.
