I don't think that social media is a great place to sell products. It's much better for informing your potential customers, building trust and a creating a favorable impression of your brand. I don't know what part of Facebook's terms and conditions your friend ran afoul of but it doesn't sound like he was shut down without warning. I often think of social media as a giant cocktail party, where people move from conversation to conversation, picking up on interesting chatter and sometimes making connections. If someone at the party was constantly trying to push a product on me, I think I'd want them to leave too.

Some social media is working a bit at discouraging business. An acquaintance of mine has been pushing his product (DVDs for pets being an example) on Facebook. His sales effort has been soft, but aggravatingly constant. Facebook would limit his posts and warn him; however, eventually he pushed the envelope one too many times and they just unceremoniously booted him with no explanation. No explanation was really necessary, but he couldn't even find anybody to complain to or answer any questions. Can you market on social networks? Sure, but if you push hard enough to actually sell a product, you may find your business out of the network.
